Wonder Woman Film Coming Two Weeks Earlier

Warner Bros have given Wonder Woman fans some really great news this week for #WonderWomanWednesday. They have announced a shift in release date for the new Wonder Woman film starring Gal Gadot. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Wonder Woman will open on June 2, 2017. This is two weeks earlier than it’s previously planned release date of June 23, 2017. Personally, I can tell you that I’m not at all surprised.

I went to see Batman V Superman on opening night. The theatre was jam packed with people and there wasn’t an empty seat in the house. Everyone was just as anxious as I to see this epic clash of titans. Yet surprisingly enough the film went on for over an hour and a half, without anyone uttering a peep. This was unusual for two reasons: First, because this was a film centering around two of the most iconic superheroes ever created. Second, because my fellow comic book geeks are always the first to run to the theatre to see said films. We have the most intimate understanding of these characters and will (more often than not) shout, laugh, and react to what is on the screen. Can you now see why I was so surprised that the theatre was absolutely silent? Thankfully, the silence was broken with a resounding uproar of fan applause. It was a moment I’ll never forget because it happened when we all saw this:

Although her superhero name was never spoken, and we had not seen a live action version of her for over 40 years, the iconic imagery did all the talking; Wonder Woman was back!

Later, I found out that my experience was not isolated. People were posting multiple parallel stories online of ‘crowds going wild’ when she appeared on screen. Obviously her resonating popularity had some influence on her earlier release date by Warner Bros. That and they probably didn’t want to compete with Transformers 5. A huge kudos goes out to Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins (Monster). Being at the helm of a film which is the first live action version in over 40 years of the premier feminist icon to the world, and introduces a brand new actor in a role which has become so closely associated with another…well, I’m sure it can be no small feat. But sometimes it takes a woman to do the job right.
