X-men Apocalypse, the next film from Bryan Singer, will finally undo one of changes that Singer himself made sixteen years ago in the first X-men film. The mutant heroes are finally going to wear something that looks like their classic costumes. This is undoubtedly a spoiler – it looks like the screengrab comes from the end of the film, so if you don’t want to know who lives, dies, or ends up a full fledged X-man by the end, venture no further into this particular article. If you’re really interested in seeing the X-men look like something out of a Jim Lee drawing on screen, read on:
In the top image: that’s Nightcrawler, Storm, Beast (way in the back), Cyclops, Mystique, Professor X, Jean Grey and Quicksilver – which I think is a team of X-men that has never happened in the comics, but one that I would very much like to read about. Bottom image is a second, closer look (with bonus Bryan Singer). The closest to their classics are Nightcrawler and Mystique, although it looks like they gave Jennifer Lawrence some pants, thank god. The costumes are still muted and uniform-like, but they’re the closest they’ve ever been to the looks we grew up with.
Honestly, this move makes a lot of sense. While giving the X-men leather uniforms for one of the first mainstream superhero movies may have made a sort of “playing it safe” sense, we’ve proven over and over now that audiences will flock to a good superhero flick with their comic costume on full display. (With some modifications, of course.) It’s good to see the X-men join the fold.
