I have to admit, I cried while watching this clip. Superman’s been through a lot lately – as one of the superheroes who is the most difficult to write and write well, he’s been brought back in adaptation after adaptation that completely misses the point of who he is. The worst example, of course, is Zach Snyder’s dour, “edgy” take on the character in Man of Steel and Batman V Superman. But in less than two minutes, Tyler Hoechlin has convinced me he can play the character, and Supergirl show runner Andrew Kreisberg has convinced me he can write the character. And it’s all really down to one single moment: When Superman flies up to Supergirl, he asks if she needs help. There’s no wink or condescension to it – he genuinely means it. And if she said no, you know he’d back off (unless lives were at stake). That’s Superman. He’s the man who does the right thing, not begrudgingly, or because there’s something in it for him…just because it’s the right thing to do. It’s amazing, and I can’t wait to see his appearance on Supergirl.
