J.J. Abrams Launches 2016 Star Wars Fan Film Contest

If you grew up on the internet in the 1990s/2000s, one video was swapped more than any other type: Star Wars fanfilms. While they began as endless variations on lightsaber-fight-in-a-forest, the genre grew through animation, visual FX and storytelling until even Lucasfilm has to acknowledge something special was happening. And they did, by setting up special fan film awards that were showcased at Star Wars Celebration every year. For a long time, the films they recognized were limited to parody and derivatives, but a few years ago they opened the field to new stories told in the Star Wars universe. This year, they’re bringing out the big guns, by having J.J. Abrams himself announce the awards. Take a look:

Welcome to the Star Wars Fan Film Awards 2016, a celebration of fan creativity inspired by a galaxy far, far away! Create and submit your own Star Wars film for a chance to win a Star Wars Prize Pack consisting of Star Wars-themed merchandise, a limited edition print of Star Wars concept art autographed by the artist, and a commemorative trophy.

Log in to access a sound asset pack of official Star Wars sounds to use in your film. Award categories include Filmmaker Select, Best Animation, Best Non-Fiction, Spirit of Fandom, Best Comedy, Best Visual Effects, and Audience Choice.

Submissions are open through 11:59 p.m. PT on April 24, 2016. Enter now and may the Force be with you!
