Solo: a Star Wars Story Leads Geeky Superbowl Moments

Another year, another game of sportsball filled with the advertisements you’ve been waiting for. We’re not talking about Tide ads, but the trailers and teasers for all of the geek media that’s coming out this year. And whether you were watching the game or just watching the ads, these things go by so fast you can blink and miss them entirely. That’s why we’re here. Here’s a collection of all the great geek-tastic moments you might have missed from this year’s Superbowl.

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY

The big surprise smash, right out of the gate. I was so surprised to see this trailer that I honestly thought it was a parody for the first few seconds. It wasn’t until Alden Ehrenreich mentioned that he was going to be the best pilot in the galaxy that I realized what I was watching. This trailer for a trailer blew us away, between Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian looking fly as fuck, and a mag-train straight out of Shadows of the Empire, we’re suddenly much more excited to see this film that we were literally hours ago.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

The newest trailer for Marvel’s biggest film ever didn’t reveal too many new details, other than the appearance of Nebula in the film, but it showed a whole bunch of new footage of the big climactic battles that will bring all of our heroes together. We’re coming up on the release of this very, very soon. It’s the biggest team up ever attempted, and only time will tell whether it will succeed or fail – but it’s Marvel, so we’re willing to put a bunch of chips in the pot.

CASTLE ROCK

What is this? We don’t know! Ok, we know a little. This new Hulu original takes its name from Stephen King’s production company, and contains references to tons of his work, Dark Tower style. Whether it actually takes place in the King shared universe or is something else entirely, we don’t know, but this trailer is full of easter eggs and straight up references for the King fans out there.

THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX

Originally known as “The God Particle,” this promising script was picked up by J.J. Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot, and then seemed to vanish entirely. There were swirling rumors that it would be the next in the Cloverfield anthology series, but then there was nothing until the appearance of a viral marketing site a few weeks ago. Then, tonight, we got our first look at the film – and the surprise announcement that it was a Netflix original, and would be premiering tonight.¬†Tonight. You want to know what it’s about? Go watch it on Netflix¬†right this minute. We’ll have a review up this week.

WESTWORLD SEASON 2

And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for. (Especially if you’re me, and you finished Season One last night.) Westworld is back, and there’ve been some changes to be sure. SPOILERS AHEAD, but the host uprising that began in the season one finale seems to be in full swing, with Dolores turned into some kind of ascendant warrior hunting down guests on horseback. Meanwhile, Maeve has met up with Scumbag Writer Guy, Bernard is staring at dead animals, and The Man in Black is somehow, somehow, still friggin’ alive. I suspect he’ll outlive us all.
