The Runaways are Coming to Hulu

The Runaways, is, and always has been, one of Marvel’s best comic book series of all time. Brian K. Vaughn and Adrian Alphona’s story of a group of teenagers who discover that their parents are supervillains and hit the road is a fantastic premise, with incredible characters, and has always, always been a TV adaptation that I’ve been begging for.

Now it looks like, thank to Hulu, I’m getting my wish.

Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the creators of the Gossip Girl TV show, are going to be the creative forces behind the reboot, which is a good sign. They’ve been working on pitching the idea of adapting Runaways to Marvel for almost a year, and are apparently passionate fans of the comic, which is a really good sign.

The heart of Runaways is its cast of characters, and it’s really important to get it right. Hulu doesn’t have the astonishing record of quality that Netflix has – yet – so it’s not an automatic guarantee that they’ll get this right. What Runaways does not need to be is a CW-style show. There’s too much interesting ground to cover that will get censored if they go that route. Thankfully, because this is on Hulu and not, say, Freeform, I have a lot of hope.

The only thing that would make this better were if Vaughn were involved. He created these characters and has been a showrunner for television recently, so there’s no reason he shouldn’t be on the staff of this show. Hopefully, that announcement is coming soon. At least let the man write an episode or two.

There’s no announcement on when the show is coming, but hopefully we’ll know more soon.
