Ms. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, or, Tim Burton’s X-men

There’s really no better way to describe what we see in this trailer for the upcoming Tim Burton adaptation of Ransom Riggs’ bestselling novel. Superpowered children, living hidden away in a British mansion fighting for a world that fears and hates them. It’s actually rather exciting.

There really couldn’t have been a better choice to direct the adaptation of Ransom Riggs’ book series than Tim Burton. The books, a strange, brooding, victorian superhero romp, are based entirely on vintage photos that were found by Riggs over a lifetime of collecting. Burton’s odd, Gothic style is a perfect fit.

I will say this trailer shows a lot of changes from the books. Emma, the lead female character and a pyrokinetic, seems to have been combined with Olive, the girl who floats away if she’s not weighed down. I’m not entirely sure how comfortable that makes me, since Olive appeared twelve in the books and my brain is having a hard time reconciling it. Emma’s actually in the above image, which makes it even odder. Check out the trailer:
