Interview: Matthew Mercer at A-kon 2016

My boss Cale went to A-kon, and asked if I wanted him to bring me anything back. I asked him to interview Matthew Mercer. For those who don’t know, Matthew Mercer is the host of Geek and Sundry’s webseries Critical Role. He is the DM of their weekly  D&D session. Other members of the group include Ashley Johnson, Marisha Ray, Taliesin Jaffe, and Sam Reigel. If you want to know what happens when a bunch of voice actors play D&D, watch Critical Role. You will not be disappointed.

Cale called me from the con, all excited. “Guess who I just shook hands with?!” He had approached Matt in one of the table game rooms.  Matt is a very friendly, laid-back guy with a lot of amazing stories to tell. I was so bummed that I couldn’t go to the con and interview him myself. After the interview, Cale called me again to gush some more, and I was smacking myself in the head for not requesting the weekend off. At the same time, I was really enjoying his excitement, and hopefully he will have a great memory of a fun time at a con that he can tell his kids!

I have a penchant for asking people to do random things – like go talk to Dee Snider and Patricia Quinn at Texas Frightmare Weekend con (I dared my daughter), or go play blackjack on New Year’s eve in Vegas… or interview an amazing DM and storyteller! Hopefully folks come away with fun stories, at least. And now Cale has a fun story from A-kon. And once again, I get to smile and listen and watch as people relate their experiences to me.  So Cale (in a fricken pirate costume!!!) sat down with Matt and… well… one does not simply… interview… Matt Mercer. One must have a conversation with him:

Raven Knighte
Raven Knighte is addicted to cheese and popsicles. Her favorite pastime is proving not only that it can’t rain all the time, but also that it actually can’t rain at all, by refusing to believe that rain exists. Her favorite quote is the letter that Brian wrote and reads at the end of the movie “The Breakfast Club,” because all five of those characters from the movie live in her head. She bathes in pixiedust daily, feeds clocks to crocodiles, and fights pirates. She has been known to take to the skies and crow loudly on occasion.
