Lord and Miller to Direct Han Solo Film!

Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, the acclaimed directing team behind 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie, are getting another shot at Han Solo. After his brief cameo (alongside Lando) in The Lego Movie, the two are now stepping into a slightly more serious take on the character, as they’ll be directing the long-rumored Han Solo origin film. The film is co-written by father-son-team Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan – you’ll know Lawrence as the guy who wrote Empire and Jedi, and Jon as a writer for Dawson’s Creek and Freaks and Geeks. So in other words…everybody freak out.

Lord and Miller said, in a joint statement:

“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”

Personally, I’m really ecstatic that, if this is happening at all, it’s happening with this team behind it. A Han Solo film should be a joyous, adventurous thing, and Lord and Miller are fantastic at doing exactly those kinds of movies. The only thing to regret here is that Nathan Fillion is probably too old to play Han.

Probably. But you know, maybe give him a call?
