It’s official – The Punisher is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Announced on Marvel.com today, Frank Castle will appear in season two of the Netflix series Daredevil, and will be portrayed by Jon Bernthal (Fury, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Walking Dead). Says Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television:
“Jon Bernthal brings an unmatched intensity to every role he takes on, with a potent blend of power, motivation and vulnerability that will connect with audiences,” said Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television. “Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same.”
The Punisher and Daredevil have been allies before, but they’ve been at odds more often – the Punisher’s willingness to kill (the defining aspect of his character) is never tolerated by Daredevil. Whether this is a guest spot to set up a future Netflix series, or a regular character, or possibly even this season’s main antagonist, we’ll have to wait and see. But I’m excited to see someone finally get Frank Castle right. I hope Marvel can do it.
One interesting thing to note is that the press release – except in one instance – goes out of its way to refer to the character as Frank Castle, not as The Punisher. It’ll be interesting to see if this is an origin tale.
