According to Variety and other sources, Star Wars break out star John Boyega has joined the Pacific Rim 2 cast. Boyega will be playing the son of Marshal Stacker Pentecost, who was played by Idris Elba in the original film. This announcement is helping the once questionable sequel gain some sturdier ground, since the last major casting news was in November of 2014 when it was confirmed Charlie Day and Burn Gorman would be reprising their roles as Dr. Newton Geiszler and Gottlieb. We won’t likely see Idris Elba’s Pentecost return, except perhaps in flashbacks, but the dynamic between his adopted daughter in Rinko Kikuchi’s Mako Mori and his real son should be really interesting.
Guillermo Del Toro was quoted:
“I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox, The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”
Pacific Rim 2 has been plagued with a rocky start. Initially Del Toro was set to direct, but he’s now moved to the producer’s chair. News was grim in September of 2015 when the sequel was “indefinitely” shelved due to a disagreement between Legendary and Universal Pictures. That changed when in Febuary 2016 it was announced that Steven S. DeKnight (Of Starz series Spartacus fame, and the season one Daredevil showrunner) would direct.
We’re excited to hear this sequel is back on – here’s hoping we’ll see more giant monster fights soon.
