HawaiiCon – A convention from beyond the stars!

If you recall from September of 2014, the Ace of Geeks had the remarkably fortunate opportunity to visit HawaiiCon – a convention dedicated to everything Hawaii, science fiction, science fact, and overall geekdom.  That’s right folks!  There were scientists giving lectures on meteoritics next to meet-and-greets with superstars; there were cosplay panels neighboring a rowdy discussion about Star Fleet’s schooling system; there was even an awe-inspiring artists alley next to a hall full of people singing tunes from Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog.  Celebrities and fans were able to mingle in the courtyard, down by the pool, and even beach-side or at the hotel bar.  All of this took place on the stunning big island of Hawaii, at the jaw-dropping Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.

What more could we have asked for from a convention?

Well, ask and you shall receive.  Saying that HawaiiCon had a successful first year would be an understatement.  This means that for their second year, HawaiiCon is getting bigger and better.  Due to the response from their inaugural year (and in combination with their successful KickStarter) they’re able to bring more guests than before!

Rod Roddenberry (Star Trek), Tony Amendola (Stargate SG1), and Aaron Douglas (Battlestar Galactica) will be there, as well as a number of amazing voice actors such as Cree Summer (Atlantis: The Lost Empire), Steve Blum (Cowboy Bebop), and Janet Varney (The Legend of Korra) just to name a few.  Meeting actors isn’t your thing?  How about hanging out with some artists like Bill Morrison (The Simpsons), Jane Wiedlin (LADY ROBOTIKA: THE SPACE OPERA), or creator of the Pineapple Man (HawaiiCon’s mascot), Sam Campos!  HawaiiCon is also inviting some professional cosplayers such as Monika Lee, Riki “Riddle” Lecotey, and BelleChere, who is returning for her second year.  Check out the HawaiiCon Guest List for all the big names.

Not only can you run into these talented people around the convention, you can go out adventuring with them.  One of the coolest events that HawaiiCon offers is called “Adventure with the Stars”.  These excursions and special workshops require a separate ticket, but it is well worth it for the experiences.  Some of the events this year include zip lining with Aaron Douglas and Pat Tallman, or a snorkel tour with Chris Judge, Pat Tallman, and Rod Roddenberry.  Want an opportunity to sit down and chat a bit more with your heroes?  You can snag a seat next to a number of stars at the lu’au being offered Friday night.  Tickets for these adventures start as low as $25, so be sure to check them out!

More interested in the academics offered?  (Me too, friend!)  Come join me at the Pew Pew – LASERS in Astronomy panel, or maybe Is that Possible?  How about Observing Exoplanets and Alien Worlds?  (Side note: hoooomigosh these sound amazing and I’m already geeking out!)

If you’re looking for gaming events – HawaiiCon has got you covered too!  They’ve got a lot of gaming options available for analog and digital gamers alike.  They’ll be hosting a few tournaments like Magic the Gathering and a Yu-Gi-Oh TCG, with plenty of RPGs and tabletop games to boot.

For those of you who are sew inclined, there will also be a cosplay contest!  (See what I did there?  Huh, huh?!)  Even if you’re not a cosplayer yourself, you can still root and cheer for all of the cosplayers to show your appreciation for all of the effort that they’ve put into their works.

Check out the winners from last year’s cosplay contest!

HawaiiCon will be taking place September 10th – 13th, 2015 at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel on the big island of Hawaii.  This has been your one-month-heads-up to plan accordingly and get yourself there to join the HawaiiCon ohana!  Go to HawaiiCon’s website at www.HawaiiCon.com for tickets and more info.

Look. At. That. View.

Side note: I’d be more than happy to grab a mai tai with you if you come find me!  If you can’t make it, look over some of the panels available and shoot some questions my way that I can to forward to the guests.  I’ll be reachable through my twitter (@GirlWithABowtie) and I’ll also be taking over the Ace of Geeks twitter account at @aceofgeeks again, so feel free to hit me up anytime during the convention!
