It’s August 17th, and you know what that means! (No you don’t, we’ve never done this before). It’s the anniversary of the very first day we taped an episode of The Ace of Geeks Podcast, waaaay back in 2010. And that makes it the six year (!) anniversary of the Ace of Geeks.
In that time, we’ve gone from one podcast to four, we’ve launched shows on our Youtube channel, we stream to Twitch on occasion (we’re getting back to that soon, sorry!) and we’ve gone from a blog to a full fledged website. As the Editor in Chief, I want to take the time to thank everybody who’s been a writer, a streamer, and most importantly a fan of us and our shows, and we want to take this opportunity to take you back down memory lane, with a few choice posts:
The very first episode of The Ace of Geeks Podcast, Mike and Jarys sit down to discuss Sherlock and a bunch of other cool stuff (I’d be more specific, but Six Years Ago Mike didn’t put what we talked about in the damn description.). It’s a fun trip down memory lane to when we had categories instead of conversation.
I wanted to include our biggest article of all the times on here, but there’s a bit of a dispute. You see, the hits from the old blog and the new website don’t necessarily match up all the time, so there’s two articles that could be our biggest hit ever. Drumroll please:
The first is this article from Chris Brecheen, writer extraordinaire, who wrote this blistering takedown of the whole “Fake Geek Girl” thing that people are still, somehow, moaning about. Guys – you can’t be a fake geek. You become a geek by liking things. Everyone likes things. Get over it. Sheesh. This post was a monster hit because it was great, but also because Wil Wheaton decided to grace us with a share, which lead to me jumping up and down and basically running around like an idiot.
The second contender for our biggest article ever is Melissa Devlin’s take on Claire from Jurassic World – this lovely piece talks about how Claire can still be a feminist icon while running around in high heels, and absolutely blew up when we posted it to Reddit. We loved this movie, and we love this post, and Melissa is awesome so you should read more of her stuff.
As for my personal favorite New Thing We’re Doing, well, that would go to our newest podcast, RP_OK, in which Ben Lee and two of his fine friends get together and discuss the gloriousness of characters and storytelling in both tabletop and video game RPGs. It’s great, and you can find the newest episode right here:
There have been some things we’ve started and never had the chance to finish. One of my favorite podcasts we got the chance to try was Chasing the Dragon, where I took a group of my high, bro-tastic coworkers and tried to teach them Fourth Edition Dungeons and Dragons. It worked ok, until they all got high and bored and stopped coming. But the episodes we did make are hilarious:
Those are some of my favorite things from the last six years – what are yours? Let us know in the comments, and one person at random will win a set of glowing critical hit D20s from Think Geek! Just like that link, only in blue! They’re PAX exclusives!
