File this under “Wha-huh-oh!” news today, but Freeform, the newly mutated ABC Family, has ordered a full series based on the classic Marvel Comic Cloak and Dagger. These seminal characters from 80s-90s Marvel comics (who occasionally pop up whenever Marvel has a giant crossover) are two of the more interesting and darker heroes that Marvel’s ever had. Created by Bill Mantlo and Ed Hannigan, Tyrone “Ty” Johnson and Tandy Bowen are homeless mutants who’s latent powers were awakened by illegal drugs forced on them by a crime lord. Cloak can use his giant cloak to teleport from place to place, while Dagger can make daggers out of light to throw at her enemies. Their original series was mostly about them combating the drug trade, with very few actual supervillains making an appearance.
Add to that the romance angle of the two heroes – they’re from vastly different upbringings, but find love in each other – and you’ve got a perfect set up for the kind of dark, YA romance that’s all the rage these days. Freeform is pretty smart to jump on this series idea. No writer is attached yet – they’re still looking – but the fact that they’ve gone straight to a series order means that they’re pretty confident in this idea. I assume the show will be paired up with Shadowhunters, their adaptation of The Mortal Instruments.
What will be interesting to see is what they do with Cloak and Dagger’s origins. They can’t call them mutants, but if they decide to tie this in to the MCU (which, why wouldn’t they?) they could make them Inhumans and have potential crossovers with Agents of SHIELD and the upcoming Marvel’s Most Wanted.
We’ll keep the details coming as we get more, but let us know what you think in the comments!
