First Doctor Strange Trailer is Wonderful and Weird

If I had been absolutely pressed to combine two movies in order to come up with my ideal Doctor Strange film, I think those two would end up being Inception and The Matrix. And in the first trailer for Marvel’s Doctor Strange film, that is exactly what we get. Take a look at the trailer below:

This is very much an origin story, and the trailer shows us that Strange will go through his transformation from arrogant surgeon to the Sorcerer Supreme over the course of the film. We don’t get to see much else at all – except that the world Strange inhabits will be filled with bizarre twists on reality brought about by magic. And if the filmmakers can capture that tone, Marvel should be in for another surefire hit.

The only major issue is, of course, the casting of Tilda Swinton. It was a bold choice to cast a woman as the Ancient One, but having a white person standing in the middle of a Tibetan monestary to teach magic to Benedict “The Whitest Man on the Planet” Cumberbatch is going to rub some people the wrong way. Swinton is amazing, and should put on a killer performance, but the orientalism of Strange’s origins is going to hurt this film a bit.

What do you think? Are you excited for Doctor Strange, or has Marvel finally lined up its first flop?

Mike Fatum
Referred to as a God Among Men, the Greatest Man that Ever Lived, and That Dude Over There…No, The Dude with the Long Hair and the Goatee…Yes, That Guy, Mike has grown up being known and loved around his apartment. In addition to being a successful film director and editor, he loves video games, movies, comic books, board games, and his wife and cat. He’s been friends with Jarys for over a decade now, and they started hosting a radio show together on college that became the genesis for the Ace of Geeks Podcast. When he realized he had so many talented friends who could write, the Podcast became an entertainment website, and here we are.

  1. The trailer is so awesome.
I have waited for this film since it was first announced a few years ago.

I think they made a good choice with Tilda Swinton. She is ethereal and mystical. While I see the argument for keeping it an Asian man, I can also see where that could have veered into stereotypes or given the film an odd Karate Kid quality(not a bad movie itself but not what you are looking for) , so they made a bold choice and went with it. Hopefully, people will forgive them with the casting of Benjamin Wong (as Wong).
