Quick: What was the best part of the first Avengers movie? Who’s been giving standout performances in every Iron Man, Captain America and Avengers film she’s been asked to show up for? And who’s finally, finally getting her own movie?
If your answer was Black Widow, you’re absolutely right. (Although I admit you can argue for a ton of “best parts” of the first Avengers.)
Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, confirmed the news in a conversation with Deadline, saying:
“We’ve announced the next 9 movies, 10 counting civil war, through the end of 2019. Where we’ll go beyond that are ongoing discussions that we’ll focus on in the next few years because we have a lot to do before then. Of the characters that you’ve just mentioned I would say certainly that the one we’re creatively and emotionally committed to doing is Black Widow.
We think she’s an amazing character. We think Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of her is amazing. She’s a lead avenger and has amazing stories to tell in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a stand alone franchise.”
To which, every fan of Marvel says, “Well, duh.”
I’m sorry if I seem a little less enthused about this than I should be. I’m super enthused. A Black Widow movie would be kickass. Done right, a straight up spy movie starring Natasha could be one of the best films Marvel has ever made. My only question is why in the hell it’s taken so long. Black Widow is an insanely popular character. She inspired a fan revolt when there weren’t enough toys of her to keep up with the demand. She’s a nuanced, three dimensional character who’s been an absolute workhorse as a sidekick in at least three films that didn’t have her name in the title. People love her. So when Marvel announced their slate of films through 2019 and didn’t include her, I was flabbergasted.
Now she finally gets her due. Sometime in the year 2020 or after.
Well, at least it’s actually happening. What do you think? Who would you want to see as Black Widow’s creative team?
