In news so strangely weird and awesome that I had to triple check it to make sure it wasn’t a hoax, the Power Rangers movie announced today on Facebook that their main villain, the classic Rita Repulsa, would be played by none other than Elizabeth Banks. Banks, the quirky comedian who brought us the Pitch Perfect movies and won our hearts in Zack and Miri Make a Porno, seems odd choice for the character famously brought to life by combining footage of the witch Bandora from the Japanese show Zyuranger and the voice acting of the fabulous Barbara Goodson. That is, until you really think about it. Rita was always sort of a goofy, comedic character with only a hint of threat in several key episodes. Banks has already shown that she’s a good enough comedic actress to make us laugh at the villain, and I would argue that she’s repeatedly proven her dramatic chops as well. Will this take on Rita terrify us? Only time will tell. The Power Rangers movie comes to our screens in 2017.
In the meantime, let’s take a look at our favorite Banks moments and our favorite Rita moments and try to put them together in our minds.
