If you are a fan of conventions, you should really go to DragonCon. It takes place in Atlanta, Georgia over Labor Day weekend, and includes the most spectacular parade. Yes, a fan convention with a damn parade.
So often with the larger conventions, commercialism and money are the name of the game. Wizard World shows are primarily about the photo ops, San Diego Comic Con is about what next big Hollywood thing can pack more bodies into Hall H, and WonderCon is a smaller version of SDCC. DragonCon however, remains by the fans and for the fans. I mean, the convention even has their own television network with original programming (including but not limited to hilarious skits and bumpers, as well as replays of large panels) that takes over the hotel channel for four days. They even cover the parade, which I missed this year because I was in a press room with several members of the cast of Battlestar Galactica.
