DC Announces Rebirth, Basically Says, “We’re Sorry.”

We may have had a little fun at the expense of both Marvel and DC for their similar marketing over “Dead No More,” and “Rebirth,” two massive events happening at both companies this year, but it turns out that behind the curtain was something a little different for both. Dead No More was the resurrection of a specific Marvel character, the Wasp, where as Rebirth happens to be a whole lot more.

A few years ago, DC decided it was time to jump start their storytelling by rebooting their entire universe for a second time. They unleashed a brand new set of stories on the world called “The New 52.” The problem was, this massive relaunch meant to revitalize their brand made almost no one happy. The fans of DC who had grown up with their stories were pissed that the characters they knew and loved were gone forever, and the new fans DC was seeking never bothered to show up, or were actively driven away by the 90s style writing and characterization. It was a weird time.

DC has slowly been making steps in the right directions towards fixing it, including the “Convergence” event, that brought back key features of their previous universes.

Now, with Rebirth, they’re looking to fix it entirely.

DC’s Chief Creative Officer, Geoff Johns, came into superstardom by using the Rebirth label on two of DC’s famous heroes, bringing Hal Jordan and Barry Allen back to the main DC universe. In the video below, Johns explains that he wants to use that same philosphy on the entire DC Universe, focusing in on what made each character exciting but bringing those elements forward to stand in the modern DC Universe, rather than trampling all over other artists and writers’ work.

So in other words, “we’re very sorry we rebooted everything, that was silly of us.”

In addition, DC just announced that they’ll be dropping the prices of their comics across the board to coincide with Rebirth. Every single book, across the entire line, will be priced at $2.99. Here’s hoping this huge gamble to get people to read more pays off for them.
